Marcel Goc inked a deal today before things had to go to arbitration. Financial terms were not disclosed, but thanks to the NHLPA website (h/t to Sharks Hockey Analysis) we see that he's going to be bringing in $$775,000 next year. Using my elementary math skills, that leaves us with $1,374,166 million dollars to sign Ryane Clowe and fill out our roster for next year.
Now the big question is, do the Sharks move anyone to free up some cap space, or are we going to ride the cap limit all year? Is it even possible to sign Clowe for that amount (and hopefully) obtain his services for more than two years? Does management still plan on imposing an "organizational cap"? Have you even read this far? Do you regret reading this far? How many questions can be asked before you decide to quit reading? Is this one too many? How about this one? Do I possess the ability to recognize when a fairly sub-par joke has lost it's appeal and now is just losing me readers? Will I ever learn?
Go Sharks.
[Clowe Update] Some Pittsburgh message boards have been floating the idea of extending Clowe an offer sheet. I'm not one to really get all worked up over some things speculated about on a message board, but they have a valid point. The Sharks are strapped for cap space, and don't have much room to work with. Get on your horse Dougie. Please.

The good news is this means more Goc blog. The bad news is I think this means the end of Kyle McLaren's time as a Shark. Although, Kyle's been the popular chopping block choice since the free agency madness began, and he hasn't moved yet so, who knows.
This Clowe thing is starting to worry me. I'm still not over the Rivet trade, so there isn't much left over emotion to get worked up about. But, it's getting there.
gray: I've heard Semenov's name hasn't been "thrown out" of the mix in terms of bringing him back. if this happens then expect mclaren to go.
dave: clowe has had me worked up since july (as you can probably tell). im just not sure we can sign him for less than 1.37 M per year. its going to be interesting.

If it means getting Clowe's deal done, both Semenov and McLaren can go. I'd be ok with that. Really, really ok.
Whilst I don't think Semenov is the best Sharks defenseman, he came a long way from the beginning of the season. I'm guessing we aren't keeping Ozolinsh around, so I think a guy like Semenov would be perfect to keep around for when Blake misses 50 games through injury! He wont be demanding the bigger salary of McLaren, but yet he still has that potential to be a big physical presence on the blue line, which I think was sorely lacking last season.
Douglas Murray was about the only blue liner who was consistently hitting last season, and I don't know how physical Lukowich and Boyle are. So it seems like we would need to have a little more muscle on the blue line.
We know that hitting isn't coming from Ehrhoff or Vlasic! It has to come from somewhere! and I would certainly prefer to have it come from a guy in his 20's than a guy who just cost us 5 Million and is in his late 30's
I say, ditch McLaren for picks, sign Clowe (1st Priority!!!) try and keep Semenov around for back up.
Does anyone know what's up with the defenseman that was touted as being the next big thing for the sharks but was on injured reserve all last year? I can't think of his name. Anyone?
His name was Brad Norton!
What's happening with him?
Steve- I have no idea whats going on with him, hes under contract but has no stats for the 07-08 season (in the AHL or otherwise). Beats me.
He is in NHL '08 though haha.
As for Semenov, although I think hes a terrible liability, I have to agree with your logic. We need a seventh D-Man and cap space. I doubt "Frankenstein" would sign for much more of the league minimum, so that may free up space for Clowe. Good thinking.
I'm thinking that they are trying to get Clowe to take a contract that is back loaded. Blake's 5 mil will be available next year, along with the increased cap space.
At least that's what I'm hoping is happening.
I'm with you Mr Plank....Semenov just doesn't inspire much confidence in me. A healthy McLaren is worth much more than Semenov
dave: just to clear up how contracts work under the salary cap, the amounts are averaged. for example: if clowe signs a two year deal that pays him 1 million this year and 4 million next year, he counts for 2.5 M both years under the cap.
You make a solid point with Blake being off the books next season. He's going to free up a lot of room to sign guys like Vlasic and Murray who are RFA's next offseason.
Let's just find a way to sign Clowe and rid our minds of this awful mess eh? I think we will all sleep better knowing he's going to be in teal next season.
Oh and if anyone is interested David Pollak has an article on the Clowe situation (which he posted three days ago).
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks/2008/07/10/clowe-and-the-sharks-deal-or-no-deal-does-a-handshake-count/
Any thoughts?
I didn't realize it was averaged. So much for that hopeful idea.
Pollack's blog made me think that it's another situation of an agent getting in the way of a good deal.
I keep hoping he's going to turn up something new, but so far all is quiet
