Alexei Cherepanov Tragedy

I'm sure some of you have heard the story about Alexei Cherepanov, a New York Rangers prospect who died yesterday during a game in the KHL. A lot of speculation has been thrown around today concerning whether or not the arena was equipped to handle the situation- there was no stretcher present and the defibrillator's batteries were dead. Regardless, any particulars seem moot at this point- the loss of a promising young hockey prospect, and more importantly, a young man who had a promising life ahead of him is a tragic reminder just how short life can be.

You can follow the story over at NHL Fanhouse here, as well as Puck Daddy who has stories here and here.

May you rest in peace Alexei.

Maybe this will make some of those players who are moving over to the KHL think twice. What if you get slashed across the throat with a skate? Think those old Soviet-style rinks and their under-staffed, under-paid, under-trained medical staff will be as good as those here in USA and Canada? Think again. RIP Alexei - a real tragedy.

The Cherepanov and Bourdon accidents are tragic, for their families and the NHL. The question is whether these accidents can be prevented in the future. Maybe better testing on the NHL's part for the Cherepanov situation and educating the players (youngsters) on dangerous activities such as motorcycle etc... Just seems like more should/can be done to prevent tragedies like these from occuring in the future.... and it is ridiculous how the Rangers are seeking another pick to replace Cherepanov. My thoughts. http://jib-sports-culture.blogspot.com/2008/11/tragedy-for-promising-rookies.html
